What is TapBird?
TapBird is a free one-tap arcade game you play directly in your web browser. It follows the classic Flappy Bird-style formula: you control a small bird that falls constantly, and every tap gives it a short upward flap. Your job is to thread it through the gaps between pipes for as long as you can. One collision ends the run.
There is nothing to download and no account to create. The game loads in a few hundred milliseconds, runs on phones, tablets and desktops, and keeps your best score on your own device. Two things make TapBird different from most browser clones: you can replace the bird, the pipes and the sound effects with your own files, and you can create a private group and race specific friends rather than an anonymous global scoreboard.
How to play
- Start the game. Tap the screen on mobile, or click anywhere or press the space bar on desktop.
- Flap to stay airborne. Each tap, click or space press pushes the bird upward. Gravity pulls it back down between taps, so flying level means tapping at a steady rhythm.
- Fly through the pipe gaps. Pipes scroll in from the right with a gap at varying heights. Touching a pipe, the ground or the top of the screen ends the run.
- Score a point per pipe. Every pipe you clear adds one point. Your best score is saved locally and shown on the game over screen.
- Restart instantly. Tap once more after a crash to go again. There are no lives, timers or ads between attempts.
Controls at a glance: tap (touchscreen), left click (mouse), or the space bar (keyboard). All three do exactly the same thing, so you can play on whatever device you have.
Features
Custom bird, pipes and sounds
Open the Customise bird, pipes & sounds panel on the start screen to upload your own image for the bird and the pipes, plus your own audio for the flap, score and crash sounds. Any standard image format your browser supports will work, and the swap is instant — useful if you want to fly your own pet, a friend's face, or a logo through the pipes. Your uploads never leave your device; they are read locally in the browser, not uploaded to a server. "Reset to defaults" restores the original art and audio at any time.
Private group leaderboards
Open Play with friends, pick a display name, and create a group. You will get a six-character code you can share. Anyone who enters that code joins the same leaderboard, so you are only ever competing against people you invited. You can belong to several groups at once and switch between their leaderboards from the dropdown. There is no global ranking to get buried in and no account required — just the code.
Tips for a higher score
- Tap in a steady rhythm, not in bursts. The most common beginner mistake is panic-tapping, which sends the bird into the ceiling. Small, evenly spaced taps hold a much flatter line than rapid ones.
- Aim for the bottom of the gap. The bird rises fast and falls slower, so it is easier to correct upward than downward. Approaching a gap slightly low gives you room to recover; approaching it high does not.
- Look ahead, not at the bird. Watch the next gap rather than your current position. Your hand will follow your eyes, and you will start reacting to the gap change before it reaches you.
- Expect the difficulty to come from spacing, not speed. Consecutive gaps at very different heights are what ends most runs. When you see a big height change coming, start adjusting a pipe early.
- Take the first few points slowly. Runs are usually lost in the first five pipes while your timing is still cold, or well past twenty when concentration slips. Settle into the rhythm before pushing.
- Play with sound on if you can. The flap and score cues give you timing feedback that is easy to miss visually once the pipes speed up.
Common questions
Is TapBird free to play?
Yes. TapBird is completely free, with no paid tiers, no ads between runs and no in-game purchases. If you want to support the project there is an optional tip link, but nothing in the game is gated behind it.
Do I need to download anything or create an account?
No. TapBird runs entirely in your browser. There is no installer, no app store listing and no signup. You only enter a display name if you choose to join a group leaderboard.
Can I play TapBird on my phone?
Yes. The game is built for touchscreens as well as desktops — tap anywhere to flap. It fills the screen on mobile and works in both portrait and landscape.
How does the group leaderboard work?
Create a group from the start screen and share the six-character code it generates. Anyone entering that code joins your leaderboard, and scores from every member appear ranked together. Groups are private to whoever has the code — there is no public or global leaderboard.
Can I really use my own bird image and sounds?
Yes. You can replace the bird sprite, the pipe graphics, and the flap, score and crash sounds with your own files from the start screen. Files are read locally in your browser and are not uploaded anywhere.
Is my high score saved?
Your personal best is stored in your own browser, so it persists between sessions on the same device. Scores you post to a group leaderboard are stored with that group so other members can see them.
Is TapBird related to the original Flappy Bird?
No. TapBird is a free, independently built game inspired by the one-tap arcade genre that Flappy Bird popularised. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to Flappy Bird or its original creator, and it does not use any of that game's assets or code.

TapBird is a small solo project built by Jash as a browser game experiment — a single HTML5 canvas, no framework, no build step. The custom-upload and private-group features exist because the fun of this genre is mostly in comparing scores with people you actually know.
